Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that all slaves were free, in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation. This event symbolized the effective end of slavery in the United States, though freedom came unevenly across regions.

The name "Juneteenth" blends "June" and "nineteenth." Celebrations began in Texas as early as 1866, with community gatherings, prayer services, and feasts. Over time, it spread across the U.S., especially as African Americans migrated. Traditions include barbecues, rodeos, music, storytelling, and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. Red foods and drinks, like hibiscus tea and strawberry soda, are common, symbolizing resilience and joy.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, following decades of advocacy, though it’s been a state holiday in Texas since 1980 and recognized elsewhere earlier. It’s a day to honor African American history, reflect on freedom’s complexities, and celebrate cultural contributions. Some critique its federal recognition as symbolic without addressing systemic issues, while others see it as a step toward acknowledging historical truths.
